About Pan pipes

Pan pipes. We all know them when we see them, but what are they, really? Did Pan actually blow into pipes or is that just a myth?

This is not actually Pan Pipes. This is a syrinx.  

These are Pan pipes. Although curiously enough the image was captioned "Syrinx blowing Faun."
